5 INGREDIENT PASTEL DE NATAS

RECIPES/SWEET TREATS/TARTS

These little custard filled tarts are the perfect thing with a cup of tea, not to mention they take a quick 20 minutes to make and only contain 5 ingredients that most people already have in their pantry.

MAKES: PREP TIME: COOK TIME: 8 little tarts 20 minutes 15 minutes

FOR THE TARTS:

1 cup of non-dairy milk

1 tablespoon vanilla essence

1/4 cup maple syrup

2 of teaspoons corn starch

pinch of turmeric (for colour)

1 roll of store-bought vegan puff pastry (I bought mine from Woolworths SA)

You could also always make your own puff pastry but to make it super easy I decided to use store-bought in my recipe. I've linked a few recipes for vegan puff pastry here:

MAKE THE TARTS

1. Preheat your oven to the highest setting.

2. Grease a muffin tin and set aside.

3.In a sauce pan on medium heat whisk the plant milk, vanilla, maple syrup, turmeric and corn starch until it begins to thicken.

4.Make sure to continuously whisk the mixture so that it doesn't make clumps.

5.Once he mixture becomes a custard consistency turn the stove off and set aside.

6.Roll your pastry into a long roll and slice into equal slices (around 4 cm thick)

7.Place the slices face up (so you can see the spiral) in the muffin pan and press down in the middle with your fingers (dipped in water), moulding it to the shape to the tin.

8.Spoon your custard mixture into each pastry mould leaving a little bit of space at the top because the custard does bubble.

9.Place in the oven for 10-15 minutes (depending on your heat of your oven) until the pastry is golden brown and the custard is bubbling. Then remove and place on a wire rack.

10.Allow to cool slightly (it is normal for the custard to drop while cooling) and enjoy !
